To Die By Your Side

I’m taking over

November 26th, 2010

Today’s post was going to be about yet another album that I’ve so far failed to mention this year. The plan, such as it was, was to write a little bit about Kele Okereke‘s debut solo album and tell you that my expectations for it weren’t particularly high. That the lead single ‘Tenderoni’ sounded far too much another song that I couldn’t stand and how that first impression had put me off wanting to listen to the album. I’d also planned to say something about how his interviews and press around the release hadn’t exactly endeared him to me so hadn’t bothered to listen to it. Then I was going to turn the whole thing on it’s head and tell you how, after being given a copy, I surprised myself by not only giving it a chance, but then actually really enjoying the album. That, despite a few dodgy autotune and gimmicky phone message moments, it’s grimey dance meets indie beats and bass had won me over.  Chances are I’d have high highted ‘Unholy Thoughts’ and ‘Everything You Wanted’ as my standout tracks, maybe even saying that ‘Tenderoni’ had grown on me a little. I’d have probably mentioned something about the absence of any cringingly awkward lyrics that tend to blight Bloc Party albums and finished off with some smart comment about how Kele’s solo record isn’t actually that big a departure from the direction his band’s last album was taking as you might imagine.  That’s what I’d planned on writing.

You know I nearly laid down and died

October 30th, 2010

For some inexplicable reason, this here blog has been nominated in the ‘Best Blog’ category in the Record of the Day Music Journalism and PR Awards 2010. Which is nice. Not to mention quite surprising. Add to that the fact that the nomination also coincides with the 6th birthday of To Die By Your Side and it’s a tad bewildering really. It certainly doesn’t feel like I’ve been doing this that long. So much has changed since October 2004. For better and for worse. Seems like a lifetime ago that I finally decided to start jotting down my thoughts on the music I liked. Can’t honestly say that I thought I’d still be doing it this far along the line. Or that people would actually recognise what I do and consider it to have any value or quality. Anyway I’m starting to ramble.

My mind is open wide

September 2nd, 2010

This is the first year for as long as I can remember that I haven’t been to a festival. Not Glastonbury, nor V and despiet an offer of free tickets, not even to Latitude. An attempt at saving some money combined with the events of recent months conspired against me. To further compound my lack of festival activity, I didn’t even bother watching much of the TV coverage. Except that is, for the headline set by Arcade Fire at last weekend’s Reading Festival.

Update

July 29th, 2010

My Dad died suddenly and unexpectedly after a short illness on Friday the 25th of June  2010. He was 67 years old. This last month has been the saddest, hardest and strangest time of my life. Despite his illness, it never occured to me that he would die. The thought never even crossed my mind. He rarely seemed to get ill and was ridiculously fit and healthy for a man of his age. To say that this came out of nowhere is an understatement and I can’t really begin to describe or explain how I feel right now. My emotions are all over the place. There are short moments of respite when I don’t think about him but they are sharply interrupted by the stupidest, most insignificant of things suddenly sparking a memory that has laid dormant for years. I can’t even begin to understand how my Mom must be feeling. Last Sunday would have been their 40th wedding anniversary but I guess somethings just aren’t meant to be. People say that life goes on but right now, that seems like the cruellest and saddest of facts.

I loved my Dad and I miss him so much.

Well that was a dramatic pause

April 15th, 2010

Hi, hello and welcome to TDBYS Version 2.0. Resurected from the grave after the sudden, unexpected and premature termination by the powers that be at Blogger, The DMCA and whoever else it was that had a hand in it’s demise.  Not that I’m bitter. Never was. Shocked? Yes. Gutted? Definately. Angry for a little while, but not bitter. Like I’ve said a few times before, I never really had a leg to stand on and they were well within their rights to pull the plug. Whether they could have given me more of a warning and allowed me the opportunity to save five years worth of writing is another matter entirely. Though not one that I feel needs to be addressed. Not anymore. No point. It’s all water under the bridge now. Besides, if the cull hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have this lovely new site. I also wouldn’t have learnt how valuable it is to archive and backup your work. Proof if it were needed that everything happens for a reason.
