To Die By Your Side

Unashamed self promotion alert

April 30th, 2019

Hello. Long time no see. My fault entirely, I’ve been off doing other things. Apologies for neglecting this place but I thought I’d check back in and see what’s happening. Hope you’ve haven’t missed me too much. Probably haven’t even noticed I’ve been gone since my posts were so sporadic before I stopped completely. But don’t worry, I haven’t been lazing about. Quite the opposite in fact, I’ve been working on a little something.

I cast a pod

January 4th, 2017

So a couple of months ago me and my friend Tom decided to try recording a podcast about, well, about nothing really. We just turned on a couple of mics and started talking about whatever came into our minds. No agenda. No topic. No planning and no research. In fact, no real thought other than this could be a bit of fun.

Way back in 2006

April 3rd, 2016

Ten years ago, when I had more hair, better eyesight and a lot more time on my hands, a music blogger named Tim asked me to take part in a podcast he was putting together. His idea was to collect together a merry band of music bloggers from around the world’s growing mp3 blog scene. Similar in feel to The Avengers, only with less emphasis on super powers and lycra suits and more emphasis on indie rock. The podcast was to be titled Contrast Podcast and the aim was to not only showcase and promote the music each blogger loved but hopefully also create a bit of traffic back to their own blogs. Each week a theme would be chosen and sent out. Each blogger would then carefully (or hastily depending on how much time they had) choose a song inspired in some way, shape or form by that theme and record an introduction to it. Rather suitably, the theme of the first ever Contrast Podcast was ‘The Number One’.

Five Things I’ve Been Loving This Week

February 29th, 2016

ONE
Iggy Pop‘Post Pop Depression’. If reports are to be believed and this is to be Iggy’s final album, he’s bowing out in style with a corker of an album that can hold its own alongside his key 70s solo records.

TWO
RJD2‘Deadringer’. I rediscovered this 2002 hip-hop classic this week purely by accident while searching for another CD. Had completely forgotten how good it is. If you love ‘Endtroducing’, chances are you’ll get a lot out of this.

THREE
Suede‘Night Thoughts’. For me, this isn’t quite as good as the reviews suggest. It has neither the grandiose pomp of Dog Man Star, nor the slinky, sleazy, youthful vigour of their debut. That said, it’s still a great album that continues the creative resurgence that began with ‘Bloodsports’. Still haven’t had a chance to watch the accompanying film though.

FOUR
Savages‘Adore Life’. This is worth it for the (kind of) title track alone. Thankfully the rest of the album is just as good. Ever so slightly less concerned with its own self importance, this may prove itself to be better than their debut.

FIVE
Micheal Stipe’s beard. Just saying.

Last Year I Was Mostly Listening To…

January 1st, 2014

Happy New Year everyone!

I hope 2014 brings you everything you wish for and more. Let’s hope there’s some awesome music to soundtrack it to. As has been a bit of a custom over the last few years on this day, it’s time to show you what I was actually listening to last year. Below are my top 15 most listened to artists according to LastFM. No major surprises to me and a pretty good way of showing that I did actually listen to the albums that made my favourites of the year list.
