To Die By Your Side

My Favourite Records of 2018

December 31st, 2018

Another year over, another list of what I enjoyed listening to the most over the last 12 months. Thanks 2018, you’ve been a pretty good one.

However, if I’m being honest, I have neither the time nor the inclination to write as much as I normally do in my annual review. Suffice to say that there have been some really good records released over the last year and choosing my favourites seemed a lot easier than normal. Having said that, I really struggled over whether or not to include the Hookworms album in this list. Musically it’s a great record, one I was really enjoying but sadly, it has been tainted by the lead singers alleged actions and in truth, I’ve not listened to it since the rather plausible news broke. Will I ever return to it? Well… I can’t honestly say. I guess that merely opens up the debate about whether you can or should separate the artist from their art. A can of worms that I’ve never really been able to resolve or answer one way or the other. Especially in a case like this where the rest of the band had nothing to do with the singer’s actions. Ultimately, I decided not to include it.

Thankfully, there are 16 albums/EPs that I have included and they are all well worth a listen. There’s something in there for everyone (probably) and every mood (almost certainly) so I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.

As ever, I’ll throw in my usual disclaimer that I make no claims about artistc merit, boundary pushing or musical innovation. Nor do I present them in any kind of numerical order. They are merely the 16 records that I’ve enjoyed listening to the most this year and the records that I’d most recommend you check out if you haven’t already.
