To Die By Your Side

My Favourite Albums of 2011

December 23rd, 2011

Okay, so before we go any further, I have to confess to making a little mistake. A miscalculation shall we say. For previously, where I said that this list consisted of 13 albums, it appears I counted wrong because there are actually 14. Clearly my maths skills aren’t what they used to be. Not that it makes much difference. These are still my favourite albums of 2011. So without further ado, I present to you, in alphabetical order, the 14 albums that stood out for me over the last 12 months.

Last week I was mostly listening to…

December 20th, 2011

Apologies all round this week I’m afraid. For not only is this post a day later than normal but alas it is wholly inaccurate. Well, not wholly but at the very least, fairly inaccurate. Thankfully I’m not to blame and am able to point the finger squarely at the technology I rely on. You see part way through a scrobble, my computer decided to have a bit of a fit. In  doing so, it sent an error to Last FM and lost over 300 song plays which is why the list looks a whole lot lighter than normal weeks. While I can’t remember everything that I’d listened to, I can tell you that there was a whole lot more Smashing Pumpkins, Patti Smith and Rolling Stones in there, along with a touch more Modern Lovers, some New York Dolls, Television, Yo La Tengo, Beatles, La’s, Sigur Ros and TV On The Radio. Not that it’s a major problem. It just means my OCD list keeping took a bit of a kicking. Needless to say, I had a bit of a 70s New York/CBGBs binge topped up with a random mix of things that I thought might throw you off the scent if you were hoping for a sneak peak of what’s made it into My Favourite Albums of 2011 list. In case you’re wondering when that will be up, well all I can say is stay tuned because it’ll be as soon as I’ve got my last Christmas shopping done. In the meantime, as ever here’s some tracks from some of last week’s most listened to (or not) artists.

Not quite my favourite albums of 2011

December 17th, 2011

Well it’s taken me a while but I think I’ve finally narrowed down my favourite albums of 2011 to a selection of 13. As ever, I’ll throw in the caveat that I make no claims for them being ‘the best’. It’s merely a list of the albums that I’ve enjoyed the most this year. Not that I’m going to reveal them just yet. You’ll have to wait a little longer to discover what made the cut I’m afraid. However if you keep reading, you’ll see what didn’t quite make the cut because this post is about 35 albums that were considered for inclusion but which, for one reason or another, didn’t quite make it.

Last week I was mostly listening to…

December 12th, 2011

Most of last week’s listening was taken up familiarising myself with a load of non album singles and b-sides from the last year. Hence why, the top four aside, this week’s list is mostly made up of individual album plays. Not a great deal to say about them to be honest except that, while I’m not entirely sure 2011 really had 1 massive stand out album for me, it has been a year of some truly great songs. With that said, I guess it’s time for some songs from last week’s most listened to. Enjoy!

Last week I was mostly listening to…

December 5th, 2011

I’m sure it’ll come as no surprise to learn that I still haven’t made any progress in my end of year list. Mainly because I came down with a cold this week and frankly, all my energy and time was taken up with sneezing, blowing my nose and generally wrapping myself up warm and snug in bed. All of which also means that my listening habits were mostly taken up artists who’ve been in and out of this list at some point in the past. In fact, I think the only new entry in there is Lykke Li, whose album I finally got around to listening to. While it;s unlikely to be a record that’ll change my life, I certainly wasn’t expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. Though obviously, my enjoyment was somewhat scuppered by being generally bunged up. Not that that should call into doubt my critical abilities.

Anyway, I’m starting to waffle now and there’s not much more to say about last week’s listening habits other than The Auteurs really were a bloody brilliant band and frankly you should all go and buy every single one of their albums. In the meantime, here’s a few tracks from some of last week’s most listened to artists.
