Get Carter

October 9th, 2011

So seeing as I posted a cover of The Horrors yesterday, I thought I’d follow it up with a cover done by The Horrors. See what I did there? So what you have here is their take on the theme tune from the film Get Carter. The original Michael Caine version that is, not the hideous Sylvester Stallone abomination. In truth it’s a pretty faithful rendition although The Horrors do ramp it up a bit and take the jazz feel of the original into the realms of spaced out psychedelia. While at first it may seem like a strange choice of song to cover, when you consider how cinematic and grand the band have taken their own music, it kind of starts to make sense. Where the original had a blissed out yet sinister feel to it, this version, with the drums driving it along and the wail of guitar roaming around, has a far tougher sound.

It’s all slipping through your hands

October 8th, 2011

Despite being a huge fan of Suede, I’ve never really bothered that much with Brett Anderson‘s solo stuff. Which means I’m not best placed to tell you how ‘Black Rainbows‘ fits into that part of his career. What I can tell you, is that it’s a damn fine record, if you can take it on it’s own merits. Despite being touted as a return to the indie rock sound that he’s best known for, I think that’s a tad misleading. Especially considering he’s spent the last year or so playing gigs with a reformed Suede. To me, that statement suggests this album is riding on the coattails of that momentum and you’d be forgiven for expecting a glammed up bunch of arse whipping songs to come careering out of the speaker. What you get instead are 10 bittersweet indie songs that slowly unfurl to reveal an artist no longer trying neither to match up to nor run away from his past.

Last week I was mostly listening to…

October 3rd, 2011

Again, not much activity around these parts last week. Though if you’ll allow me to offer up an excuse, I’ve been under the weather, having been struck down with a rather nauseous stomach bug that left me in bed for the latter part of the week. I’m on the mend now though. Well, just about. Anyway, I still managed to fit a fair amount of music into the early part of last week and as you can see, most of it was taken up with new records from Wilco and Ryan Adams. The former is rather good, if not quite as sonically adventurous as the opening track suggests, while the latter is getting better with each listen.

DJ Shadow also found his way back into rotation with his new album, ‘The Less You Know The Better‘. I had little to no expectations after the major disappointment that was his last record but this is seriously a great record. I’d put it somewhere in between ‘Endtroducing‘ and ‘The Private Press‘. While unlikely to be a genre and era defining release, it is by far the most consistently enjoyable album he’s made since his debut.

I won’t dwell too much on the rest of the list because last week’s listening was mostly made up with recent releases that have all been mentioned here in passing before. However, before we get on with the music I will take this moment to say that I may have been a tad hasty in my dismissing of the Stephen Malkmus and Summer Camp albums as they both seemed to reveal more delights than my initial listens had noticed. Ones to watch I think. Anyway, as ever, here are a few tracks from some of last week’s most listened to artists.
