To Die By Your Side

But at night it’s a different world

July 30th, 2011

A lazy post today for what has ultimately been a lazy week around here. Apologies for the lack of updates but I just haven’t had the time this week. What I have done though is work out how to add some new buttons at the bottom of the post so that you can start to share this place on whatever social networking sites you might use. If you so wish that is. Assuming they work that is. Anyway, that’s enough self promotion for the time being. Hopefully this post will go some way to making up for the rather blatant and needy attempt to get this place seen by more people. So on with the music. Three covers that I thought sounded pretty good and were worth sharing.

Last week I was mostly listening to…

July 25th, 2011

So that was last week. Quite a mix there of old and new. Plenty of love for the 60s and actually looking at it now, it seems the 80s was the only decade that was neglected. Which isn’t a massive surprise as aside from a few choice bands, it’s never exactly been my favourite decade for music. Not compared to the rest anyway. Last week also saw little in the way of new music with only She Keeps Bees and The Horrors managing to fly the flag for the newer releases. No major reason for that, it’s just that last week didn’t see any new releases of interest and I think I just needed to listen to some familiar favourites for a while. Speaking of which, if you make the jump, you’ll find a few tracks from some old favourites who made it into my ears last week.

This song will become the anthem of your underground

July 24th, 2011

I obsessed over this song when it came out. Listened to it endlessly. Just a wonderful, wonderful thing. Yet I hadn’t listened to it in years until this morning when it randomly popped up on shuffle and reminded me of it’s greatness. The weird thing is that I still knew all the words instantly. As though I’d only listened to it yesterday. Which is a bit weird. Especially as I probably can’t even remember lyrics to songs I did actually listen to yesterday. I’m not if it’s a sign that I’m getting old or if it just means that i don’t have the time to listen to songs endlessly like I did when I was younger. I’m guessing it’s a bit of both. Not that it means I don’t love music as much as I used to. It’s just that as you get older, stuff gets in the way. Things that have to be done regardless of whether you actually want to do them. Anyway I’m rambling, back to the song.

You offer no reason

July 22nd, 2011

In the last post I mentioned that I’d been listening a lot to She Keeps Bees so I thought I’d write a little bit more about them. Now while I’d not heard of them before, it turns out they’ve been around for a few years and indeed, ‘Dig On‘ is their third album. Obviously not having heard them before I can’t really say how this album fits with their back catalogue but taken on it’s own merits, it’s a great but minimal blues rock album. Due to the boy-girl duo dynamic of the band and their basic drum-guitar sound, it would be easy to draw comparisons with bands like The White Stripes and The Kills. However while there are similarities, those weren’t the first bands I thought of. As I said last time, early Cat Power springs to mind with a little bit of Sleater Kinney thrown in for good measure.

Last week I was mostly listening to…

July 18th, 2011

Some big hitters in last weeks listening with the likes of Nick Cave, Radiohead and PJ Harvey vying for top position. Alas, their efforts were all in vain as the number one position went to The Horrors whose new album ‘Skying‘ is something rather wonderful. I’m not quite sure though whether it is better than ‘Primary Colours‘ but time will tell. It’s certainly another great collection and a definite pointer that they’re becoming something of a very special band. I’ll probably write something more about it once I’ve properly digested it. Other new records last week included a great debut from indie synth band Gardens & Villa, along with She Keeps Bees, whose bare soulful blues reminds of early Cat Power. Radiohead meanwhile rose to the top three courtesy of the leaked audio of their From The Basement show. Head over here and you’ll be able to listen to it yourself but before you do that, there’s a couple of session tracks after the jump from some of the other artists that found their way onto last week playlist.
