Well I think it’s pretty obvious that a certain 70 year old dominated my listening habits last week. Still, there were some good showings from a few younger acts as well. Of the new stuff that I got in last week, I have to say that I’m really liking the new Thurston Moore album, ‘Demolished Thoughts‘. Could be a definite contender for my end of year list but I think I’ll live with a bit longer before I say anymore. So without any further delay, follow the jump to get a few tracks from some of the bands and artists I was listening to last week.

I wasn’t really planning on posting anything today as I’ve got a lot of menial tasks to be getting on with. Then this song shuffled into play and I couldn’t resist sharing it with you. So here’s a quick shot of Elliott Smith for you. The piano and band of the studio version are swapped for a picked acoustic guitar and Elliott’s hushed intimate vocal. Simple but extremely effective. Enjoy this and enjoy your Sunday!

So this is a rather lovely little song from a darling little album. Although, having said that, I’m not as enamoured with Cat’s Eyes as a lot of people seem to be. The reviews have been pretty unanimous in their praise and while I don’t necessarily disagree with them, I wouldn’t agree with them entirely. The record itself doesn’t have any glaring faults and I can’t quite put my finger on why I don’t completely love it but alas, there is something missing for me. It seems a little bit too much like an exercise in producing a certain type of music, rather than a natural evolution of a sound.

If there’s one song that definitely lives up to The Raconteurs‘ name, it’s this one. As far as weaving a good yarn goes, this is up there with the best. A dramatic Dylan-esque tale of family secrets, lies and violence, delivered in a sprawling Southern country blues rock. It’s tense stuff. Scripted perfectly. Teasing the details with instrumental delays between each verse. Brendan Benson‘s lethargic guitar licks giving a real sense of the oppressive Southern heat, the band upping the tempo as the tale unfurls, erupting into it’s all too inevitable climax.
