To Die By Your Side

My Favourite Albums Of 2010

December 31st, 2010

Okay, so this is a little delayed after my claims last time that it was all done and ready to be posted. Not entirely my fault though. Blame the flu that put me in bed for six days and then all the Christmas to-ing and fro-ing that stopped me from sitting at my computer for longer than five minutes at a time. never mind, it’s here now and I’ve managed to get it done before the year is actually over. So without further ado, here are my favourite 15 albums of the year. Presented in no particular order, they are all worthy of time in your ears and highly recommended by me. If you like what you hear, then go buy them.

Not My Favourite Albums Of 2010

December 20th, 2010

Well I’ve done it. I’ve finally chosen my favourite albums of the year. It took a little longer than I thought but I eventually whittled a pretty long list down to a selection of just 15 albums. While I could easily have rounded it up to 20 I decided not to. 20 felt like it was just too a few many. Like I was making concessions to albums I’m not entirely convinced by. It did however mean that there was some serious to-ing and fro-ing over the inclusion and exclusion of a couple of them. Having said that, I’ve lived with the 15 chosen albums for a few days now and I’m happy that they they are the albums that I genuinely think are great records. However because I took so long deciding on them, I’ve not yet written anything about them. So rather than rush out the publication of My Favourite 15 Albums of 2010, I thought I’d stretch the process out a little longer and tease you with a rather long list of the albums that were considered but that didn’t quite make it.

Even if it throws you to the fire

December 11th, 2010

Time for something a little bit different I feel. Something unexpected. After all, it’s not everyday you come here and find me posting a song that actually did pretty well in the charts. Not that I’m adverse to pop songs. Nor am I adverse to a bit of Kylie Minogue. It’s safe to say I have a bit of a soft spot for her. Kylie’s always had some weird kind of credibility within the indie community and I was just the right age to get swept along in her original fame as the Neighbours tom-boy Charlene through to her beginnings as a PWL pop star. In the twenty odd years that have followed, Kylie’s released a lot of singles, a couple of which are downright classics. Though having said that, it sometimes feels like I’m the only person who doesn’t particularly like ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’. Not that I have to justify anything I post or listen to. Regardless of who recorded it, a good song is a good song. And this, is undoubtedly a good song. One of my favourites of the year in fact.

You can’t take it anywhere

December 8th, 2010

I really need to pull my finger out. Everywhere I look, I’m seeing End of Year lists popping up left, right and centre. On blogs, in magazines and now on Facebook feeds. Yet I’m no closer to shortlisting mine than I was at the beginning of the month. At this rate, I should be ready to publish it sometime in March. Not that I’ve any kind of valid excuse. It’s just that this year is proving to be something of a mammoth task. To date, I’ve spent the last week or so listening back to potential inclusions, re-evaluating records I’d previously dismissed and questioning those I’d assumed would be dead certs. The result is that I’m adding just as many as I’m crossing out. Not because there are so many amazing records, more that there are so many balanced on the great/mediocre divide and I can’t quite decide on which side some actually lie.

Jenny And Johnny – ‘I’m Having Fun Now’

December 6th, 2010

This post comes with many assumptions and preconceptions. For example, before hearing a note of this record I assumed I’d hate it. After pressing play my finger hovered over the skip button, assuming it would be needed to flick through rubbish song after rubbish song after rubbish song. My assumptions were based on two things.
