To Die By Your Side

All I want is to be a happy man

September 12th, 2010

Just a random selection of sessions this morning. Well, I say ‘random’ but I’m sure if I looked hard enough I could find a tenuous link to justify posting them together. But frankly the only valid reason I can think of right now, is that they’re all pretty damn cracking. I mean, obviously there’s an easy link between the first two and I’m pretty sure I could find some random way to link the others but frankly, it’s early on a Sunday morning and I’m feeling lazy, so excuse me if I can’t be bothered.

Adrenaline, it pulls us near

September 7th, 2010

Though I am likely to change my mind whenever ‘Nightswimming’ comes on, this is probably my favourite R.E.M. song. A song that continues to astound me every time I hear it. The first time I heard it, I remember thinking that I couldn’t believe they’d released a single that managed to sound so uncommercial and yet so utterly, utterly wonderful. Michael Stipe’s semi-spoken stream of conscious style delivery is so effortlessly cool. Intriguing, haunting and beguiling. Full of abstract imagery poetically brought to life evoking the late night atmosphere of the song’s creation and the bleak questioning of the lifestyle that surrounds the band. The ominous, wailing guitar providing an unsettling yet beautiful backing.

And just when you think it can’t get any better, they pull this version out of the bag. Recorded live with Radiohead‘s Thom Yorke taking the place of Patti Smith and doing a pretty damn good job of it too.

An attempt at saving some money combined with the events of recent months conspired against me. To further compound my lack of festival activity, I didn’t even bother watching much of the TV coverage. Except that is, for the headline set by Arcade Fire at last weekend’s Reading Festival.
