I’m not bored, I’m just in need of something raucous this morning to wake me up. And if I’m not mistaken, this Iggy Pop cover by The White Stripes fits neatly into that category. It’s rough, it’s raw, it’s all jagged around the edges and, clocking in at just 1 minute and 25 seconds, it certainly doesn’t outstay it’s welcome. Much like this post.

The saying goes, that things come in threes, so seeing as I’ve posted two covers of this Big Star song before, I guess it’s time to round things up with this third one. The previous two versions I’ve posted were by Jeff Buckley and Bat For Lashes. This one however sees Beck give it a go. And here he’s in full on ‘Sea Change’ mode. Alone with his voice and acoustic guitar he gives a heartfelt, reflective rendition. All withdrawn and isolated. Full of longing and desperation. think this might be my favourite version of the song. Although thinking about it, the crazy thing is, I’m not entirely sure I’ve ever heard the original.

I’m trying not to wallow… but it’s hard. I look forward to the day when the first line of this exquisite cover begins to ring true.
