The Sand In The Hourglass Is Running Slow

To say that Mumford & Sons sound nothing like White Lies would be a bit of an understatement. One is a banjo picking, bluegrass aping folk troupe, the other a post punk indebted group of doom mongerers. Any similarities between the two are few and far between. They seem to inhabit entirely different musical worlds, so far removed from one another that you simply couldn’t ever see them crossing paths. Yet that is exactly what has happened with this cover.

That’s What I Was Often Taught

It doesn’t matter how many times I listen to this song, it still feels a little odd to hear Nick Cave singing the word astronaut. It’s just not something I’d associate with him. Biblical brimstone and fire, yes. Planets and space men, no. Not that the song is actually about intergalactic travel or anything, it’s just a metaphor that stands out from the rest of his ouevre like the proverbial sore thumb.

I Know I Can Count On You

I know it’s only been a week or so since my last post about Florence & The Machine but this is too good not to share. Over the weekend, Florence was joined by the Bognor University Choir for her first festival headline slot at BBC Radio 1‘s Big Weekend. As if a string section and 30 strong choir wasn’t quite enough, Dizzee Rascal also joined her for a repeat of their Brit Awards performance of ‘You’ve Got The Love’.

Broken Social Scene – Forgiveness Rock Record

I’m a little frustrated with the latest Broken Social Scene album. Normally their records hook me in instantly but this one hasn’t. The more I’ve listened to it, the more I find myself hoping the next listen will be the one that clicks. As though an elusive element will suddenly slip into place or reveal itself to me in a way I’d previously overlooked. Alas that moment of clarity has yet to appear and I’m beginning to suspect it may never show itself. For the time being, ‘Forgiveness Rock Record’ sits on the verge of being a great record. Teetering on the brink, reluctant to make that necessary final leap.
