There seem to be two schools of thought on The Horrors new album. Depending on your viewpoint, ‘Primary Colours’ is either an early contender for record of the year. Or it’s a deliberately styled and rather cynical exercise in genre reproduction that fails to bring anything new to it. For the record, I sit firmly in the first camp but can definitely see where the second viewpoint comes from. From shoegaze to goth to pyschedelia to krautrock, ‘Primary Colours’ dips it’s toes in a series of genres and you could easily play spot the influence while listening to it. Whether you see it as little more than the band imitating their favourite records is ultimately personal opinion but it does beg a few questions about how you judge music. Read more
